Plot is the sequence of events in a story in a cause-effect chain. This cause-effect bond is the invisible thread that keeps the reader on the page. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays two powerful roles in the plot: a drafter in generating scaffolding and a tireless auditor in catching plot holes. But it is up to the author to decide which event serves the theme and which surprise is gained. In this unit, we will cover how to use AI in building and controlling structures.
Step 1: Pitch structure and turning points
The most common structure is three acts. The first act (establishment) introduces the world, character, and main conflict; Finally, a turning point (the event that irreversibly pushes the character into adventure) comes. The second act (development) is the longest part where the obstacles increase and the character is tested; there is a midpoint in the middle (the big moment when the cards are dealt again) and a nadir at the end (the crisis when all seems lost). The third act (resolution), climax and conclusion.
AI knows this structure very well and produces a quick skeleton for you. Its benefit is finding direction on a blank page. The risk is that the formula becomes mechanical: AI can fill three acts perfectly but without soul. Take the structure from the AI, but you decide whether each milestone serves your theme.
Your role: structure assistant to the fiction writer.Premise: [single sentence]. Type: [genre]. Theme: [main idea]. Main character's desire: [x]. Biggest obstacle: [y]. Task: Suggest a three-act plot skeleton. Mark the following: 1st act turning point, midpoint, nadir, climax. Explain in one sentence how each turning point connects to the theme. Avoid cliché solutions; ELIMINATE the most obvious plot point and offer an alternative.
Tip: Curtain structure is a skeleton, not a mold. See the skeleton given by AI not as a "form to be filled in the blanks" but as a "suggestion that can be broken". The best stories are often the ones that consciously stretch the mold.
Step 2: Scene cards
A scene card is a working tool that captures the essence of a single scene in a few lines: who is in the scene, what they want, what obstacles there are, with what change the scene ends. A good scene ends with a situation different from where it started (hope → despair, ignorance → discovery). Transcribing a long text onto scene cards allows you to see the structure from a bird's eye view. AI generates draft cards fast; You control the value change of each card (situation at the beginning and end of the scene).

Step 3: Tension, tempo and space control
Tension makes the reader wonder "what will happen next?" is his curiosity; It usually arises from the gap between the character wanting something and not being able to get it. Pacing is the speed of events: action scenes occur in quick, short sentences; emotional scenes flow in slow, broad moments. A plot hole is a broken link in the logic chain: an unsolved clue, an unmotivated behavior, an impossible timing.
AI is a powerful auditor in these three respects because it scans the text in an emotionless but systematic way. Giving him the summary of the event and the rules and having him list the gaps in logic makes visible the errors that the human eye eagerly skips over.

A separate control for tempo:
Where does the tempo drop in the following passage?Task: Mark the places that slow down the reader, are unnecessarily long, or repetitive.Also show consecutive scenes with a similar tempo (all fast / all slow). Suggest cutting or shortening, but leave the decision to me.
Caution: The "gap solution" suggested by the AI is often the most obvious, the most cliché. To find the gap, AI is the perfect tool; But it's the author's job to figure it out. The AI might offer a cheap solution like "the character actually had a twin brother"; You look for a winning solution that fits the theme.
Chekhov's gun and the setup-payment balance
The classic principle of plot solidity is "Chekhov's gun": if a gun is shown hanging on the wall in the scene, it must be fired before the story ends; If it's not going to fire, it shouldn't stay there. This principle establishes a two-way balance. On the one hand, setup: clues given to the reader, objects introduced, seeds planted. On the other hand, payment (payoff): the conclusion of these installations, solving the clues. Every element that is not established and paid for leaves the reader unsatisfied; Any surprise that is not paid for feels like a "cheat" (deus ex machina). AI is very useful for checking the setup-pay balance in a text: you can have it list items that are “installed but not paid” and “paid without being installed.”
Task: Check the setup-payment balance in the following event summary. List: 1) Items that were established but did not result (hint, object, promise), 2) Items that suddenly brought a solution without ever being established (risk of cheating). For each item, specify the relevant scene. Solving; just show the imbalance.
Tip: At the end of my article, "Did I reap every seed I sowed?" Check in reverse. An unresolved detail that remains in the reader's mind is often a trace of a setup that the author has forgotten.
three mini cases
Case 1 — Structural framework. A debut novelist lost direction in the middle of his 80,000-word story; Events were moving aimlessly. Case 2 — Hidden cavity. A crime writer didn't realize that the killer had information that couldn't be included in a scene. Case 3 — Tempo correction. In one author's novel, five scenes proceeded one after the other, at the same slow, interior-monologue tempo; The reader was bored. The AI tempo control showed this as "all five scenes are at the same pace, with no breath or contrast between them." The author broke the rhythm by inserting a short, tense scene.

Common mistakes
- Filling the curtain structure mechanically. If the formula remains soulless, the story is lifeless; Flex the pattern according to the theme.
- Not looking for value change in scenes. The scene that ends where it started is weak.
- Let AI solve the gap. AI finds it, you solve it; his solution is often cliché.
- Keeping the tempo even. Scenes at the same pace, one after the other, tire the reader; contrast is required.
- Trusting the AI's praise. "It's nice" doesn't work; Request a concrete, item-by-item audit.
