Accessibility and Universal Design (UDL): Accessible Content for Everyone

No matter how well a material is prepared, it is useless if the student cannot access it. Small print, dense text, low contrast, an instruction based only on hearing, an activity based only on vision; Each of these builds an invisible wall for a student. Accessibility means that the content can be perceived and used by everyone with different needs. In this unit, we will discuss the approach of designing the material for everyone from the beginning, that is, the principle of Universal Design (UDL) rather than a "fix added later". AI is a powerful aid in making content accessible; But the final audit and real user testing is up to the expert.

Three principles of UDL

Universal Design suggests designing content in different ways from the start, rather than for the single “average student.” It has three basic principles:

  • Multi-presentation (more than one way of perception): Presenting the same information in different formats such as text, visuals and audio. One student understands by reading, another by listening, and another by visual.
  • Multiple expressions (more than one way of expression): Allowing the student to demonstrate what he or she has learned in different ways: writing, speaking, pointing, drawing.
  • Multiple engagement (more than one motivational path): Supporting interest and motivation in different ways: offering choice, linking to interest, making the goal visible.

These principles are not foreign to special education; It is actually a general framework of good special education practices. AI is fast to generate content variation based on each policy.

Tip: Instead of "make this material accessible," ask for concrete: "font size at least 14, short lines, high contrast, alternative text for each image, give the instructions both in writing and item by item." Concrete constraint yields feasible output.

Concrete accessibility adaptations

Some basic concepts:

  • Alternative text (alt text): Short text explaining what an image says. For a student with visual impairments, the screen reader reads it out loud; Even if the image is not loaded, the text appears.
  • Screen reader: Software that reads on-screen text aloud. It works well if the title structure of the content is proper and the images have alt text.
  • Contrast and font size: It is critical for vision and attention differences that the color difference between the text and the background is high and the font size is large enough.
  • Captioning/transcription: The written equivalent of a video or audio content for the student with a hearing difference.
  • Simple language and structure: Short sentences, bullet points, plenty of space; foundation of accessibility for reading and attention.

three mini cases

Case 1 — Alternative text. A teacher was preparing a digital worksheet for a student with visual impairments; Writing alternative text for each of the 12 images would take a long time. He described the images anonymously and asked the AI ​​for short, functional subtexts. AI produced 12 subtext drafts; the teacher corrected two of them (one was unnecessarily long, one gave the wrong detail). The time was greatly reduced and the screen reader read the content correctly.

Case 2—Multiple presentation. A science outcome existed only as a text. The teacher asked the AI ​​for the same content in three ways: short text, step-by-step visual diagram annotation, and simplified transcript for voice narration. Different students in the class achieved the same outcome in different ways: one read, one followed the diagram, one listened. One win, multiple doors.

Case 3 — Surface accessibility error. One teacher shared that she “made accessible” a material, but only changed the background color; the font size was still small, there was no alt text in the images, the instructions were in a single format. When tested with a real student, the content was still found to be inaccessible. The right way was to address accessibility by testing it based on needs and with real users, without reducing it to a single change. Mistake: mistaking accessibility for a cosmetic touch.

Case 4 — Simplification for attention. One worksheet was full of colorful frames, lots of visuals, and a crowded layout; A student with attention deficit disorder couldn't figure out which question to look at. The teacher asked the AI ​​to rearrange the same content with the principle of "one task per page, few stimuli, plenty of space, clearly numbered steps." In the new version, each question was on its own page, in a simple frame. The child completed the leaf independently for the first time. Accessibility here was not about adding anything, but removing unnecessary stimulus. Sometimes the most powerful adaptation is to blank the page; AI is a quick help in this “simplify to make accessible” business.

Additional template: accessibility checklist

Common mistakes

  • Adding accessibility later. Designing from scratch (UDL) is both easier and more effective than patching it later.
  • Reducing it to a single change. Just changing the color or the font size and thinking "it's accessible".
  • Leaving out or writing poorly subtext. Alt text that does not explain the visual content or is unnecessarily long is useless.
  • Relying on one way of perception. Only auditory or only visual instruction excludes some students.
  • Not testing with real users. Accessibility cannot be verified without testing it with the target student.
  • Thinking uniformly as "disabled". Needs are individual; Adaptation is made according to need.
