The name of this approach is Positive Behavior Support (ODD / PBS): understanding the function of behavior and replacing the undesirable behavior with a positive and teachable behavior that serves the same function. It is based on teaching, not punishment.

ABC recording and functional assessment
The primary tool for understanding behavior is the ABC recording. These three letters represent:
- A — Antecedent: What happened immediately before the behavior? (A difficult task was given, recess ended, the noise increased.)
- B — Behavior: What exactly happened? In an observable, measurable way. ("He threw the pen on the ground and shouted for 30 seconds.")
- C — Consequence: What happened immediately after the behavior? (The task was removed, the teacher came to him and he was removed from the classroom.)
When these records accumulate, a pattern emerges: in what situations does the behavior occur, and what is gained next? The function of the behavior is read from here. Functional assessment (FBA) is the process of systematically examining this pattern and understanding the cause of the behavior. AI is helpful in summarizing accumulated ABC records and suggesting possible functional hypotheses; but the final function interpretation and plan belongs to the expert.
Caution: Do not assume that the behavior is "malicious." "He's doing it to annoy me" is not a function. The function is usually acquisition, avoidance, interest, or sensory need. The right function brings the right plan.

Case 1 — Pattern extraction. A teacher recorded a student's desk-knocking behavior as ABC for three weeks (23 recordings). He gave the records anonymously to AI and asked for a summary and pattern. AI summarized that the behavior began “when the writing task was assigned” and then “the task was delayed” in 18 of the 23 recordings; possible function: escape from duty. The teacher confirmed this through observation and built the plan according to the escape function (break card + task bracketing). The result: hitting frequency halved in four weeks.
Case 2 — Alternative behavior. A boy was pushing his friends to get attention. The teacher asked the AI for an alternative behavior that serves the same function (interest) but is positive and the steps to teach it. The AI suggested a plan to “tap him on the shoulder and say his name” and reinforce this; the teacher adapted it to the child's level and added planned positive attention. The pushing behavior was replaced by an acceptable demand for attention. Principle: before eliminating the behavior, determine what to replace it with.
Case 3 — Punishment trap. A teacher asked the AI “how to stop this behavior” and was met with a punishment-focused suggestion such as “ban him from recess every time he does it.” If he did this, he would take away the break and movement the child already needs; behavior would likely increase. The teacher noticed this and changed the prompt to “understand the function, suggest a plan based on teaching, not punishment.” Error: punishment logic that aims to suppress behavior, ignoring function.
Case 4 — The power of preventive regulation. A student's behavior increased the most during transitional moments (from activity to activity, from classroom to garden). When the teacher had the AI summarize the ABC data, he saw that most of the behavior occurred in "sudden transitions without notice." The solution was not to punish the behavior, but to organize the environment: a visual countdown before the transition, a “before-after” card, and a two-minute warning. With these preventive regulations, transition crises have decreased significantly; It was enough to remove the trigger without "intervening" in the behavior at all. Lesson: the best behavioral plan often begins in the environment, before the behavior occurs.

Common mistakes
- Bypass function. Intervening without understanding the behavior often increases the behavior.
- Thinking focused on punishment. The “stop/ban” logic is contrary to ODD; Teaching and prevention are essential.
- Attributing intent. "Doing it out of spite" is not a function; The function is acquisition/avoidance/interest/sensory.
- Prohibiting without introducing alternative behavior. When reducing a behavior, an acceptable behavior should be taught instead.
- Making plans without collecting data. Without ABC recording and functional assessment, the plan is based on guesswork.
