The most valuable and time-consuming job of a preschool teacher is to observe the child. Observation is the nonjudgmental and concrete recording of what the child is doing: not "Ali is naughty," but "he pushed his friend's tower twice in the center of the block." Good observation is the basis of the progress report, parent meeting and guidance when necessary. But it is difficult to watch 20 children during the day and take proper notes; Notes often remain scattered, short and confused. In this unit, we will learn to use AI to structure observation notes (organized, separated by development areas, and made readable). Critical limit: You make the observation by watching the child; AI only edits your raw grade, it does not produce new information or assessments about the child.

The golden rule of observation: describe, do not judge

The basis of good observation is being descriptive: you write what you see as it is, keeping interpretation and labeling separate. “A shy child” is a label; "He played alone for 15 minutes in free play, looked at his friends twice but did not participate" is an observation. This is where AI's most dangerous trap comes into play: the AI ​​tends to generate "interpretations" from your memo and may try to add behavior that doesn't exist ("he was probably anxious"). This is a hallucination. So the AI ​​is given clear instructions: just edit what I wrote, don't add any new observations or comments.

Observations are usually divided according to developmental areas: cognitive (thinking, problem solving, counting), language (words, sentences, communication), social-emotional (sharing, emotional expression, cooperation), motor (gross motor: running-jumping; fine motor: holding scissors-pencils) and self-care (eating, toileting, dressing). AI is very good at sorting your messy note into these areas — as long as it gets the content from you.

Attention: Ask the AI ​​"what can I infer about the child's development from this note?" Don't ask. This forces the AI ​​to evaluate the child and it has not seen the child. Give the AI ​​just the “structure, organize, zonate” task.

Step by step: from raw note to regular recording

  1. Take anonymous raw notes. Keep short, descriptive notes throughout the day; Use anonymous phrases such as "a child/girl aged 4" instead of a name.
  2. Have it edited by AI. Divide the note into areas of development and have it cleared in descriptive language.
  3. Maintain distinction of interpretation. Make sure the AI ​​doesn't add comments; If added, remove it.
  4. Notice the missing space. In which area of ​​development do you have no marks? This indicates that you need to observe that child more in that area.
  5. Add the ID manually. Save the regular text with the name in the child's file on your own computer; the name never found its way into AI.
  6. Teacher verification. Confirm that each sentence is really what you observed.

Observation types: instant note, event log, checklist

Observation is not a single method; The teacher has different tools at his disposal and AI helps organize each of them. A snapshot (anecdotal record) is to write briefly and descriptively about a moment that stood out during the day (“he shared a sandcastle with two friends in the garden for 20 minutes”). Event recording is tracking when a particular behavior (e.g. biting, crying) occurs, in what situation, and how often; This shows if there is a pattern. The checklist is to mark whether certain skills (holding scissors, standing on one leg) are observed or not. The experienced teacher uses them together: the checklist gives the map, instant note and event recording depth. You can tell the AI ​​to “design a checklist to monitor these skills” or “summarize my event logs in terms of frequency and status” — but you are always the one doing the marking and monitoring the event. AI regulates the vehicle, it does not make the observation.

Why is descriptive observation important?

Descriptive observation is both fair and useful. It is fair because it does not confine the child to a label; Instead of saying "offensive" it records the behavior and context so you can see the change going forward as well. It's useful because saying "your child is aggressive" when talking to a parent starts a conflict; Saying "he had three row fights last week, once this week" is a concrete and debatable basis. AI helps refine descriptive language; but the raw material of the description comes from your eyes.

three mini cases

Case 1 — Organization of scattered notes. One teacher left 12 scattered observation notes on her phone throughout the day (“made a tower, spilled it at dinner, joined in a song…”). It took half an hour to put them in order in the evening. He gave the anonymous notes to AI and said, "divide them into development areas, clear them in descriptive language, and add new comments." 12 scattered notes turned into an organized text divided into 5 areas; The duration decreased from 30 minutes to 8 minutes. He then added the names to his own file.

Case 2 — Sorting out the hallucination. A teacher noted, "A 4-year-old child played alone in free play"; AI expanded this to “child who is introverted and possibly has social anxiety.” The teacher noticed this comment and deleted it: the note was just a memory of one day, the AI ​​could not produce a diagnosis from it. He corrected the instruction: "don't add comments or diagnoses, just edit my sentence." Lesson: It is the teacher's responsibility to weed out the judgments added by the AI.

Case 3 — Visualization of missing area. When a teacher had the AI ​​compile a child's notes for two weeks, she discovered that there were no notes in language and self-care; It was always in the motor and social areas. This did not indicate that the child was problematic in those areas, but that the teacher neglected to observe those areas. The next week she consciously observed language and self-care; The child's developmental picture is balanced.

Common mistakes

  • Asking for an evaluation from the AI. AI cannot evaluate the child; It just edits your note.
  • Leaving hallucinatory comments. Weed out the “probably…” sentences that the AI ​​adds.
  • Confusing observation with labels. “Shy” is a label; write down the behavior and context.
  • Giving child data to AI. Do not enter any name/identity; Work anonymously.
  • Drawing conclusions from a single observation. One moment of a day is not a pattern.
Tip: Keep observation notes short and immediate throughout the day; Don't rely on memory. It takes minutes to have the AI ​​edit it in the evening, but you only retain the freshness of the raw observation if you write it down on the fly.

Observation is the raw material of developmental assessment and can only be produced by the teacher observing the child. Good observation is descriptive: it records behavior and context without judgment. AI is a powerful aid in sorting through your scattered raw notes into areas of improvement — but it should NOT produce new observations, interpretations, or diagnoses. Child data is not entered at all; You add the ID to the text yourself. It is the teacher's job to sort through the judgments the AI ​​adds and verify each sentence.

Application task

Keep at least 6 descriptive observation notes for one (anonymous) child over the course of a day. In the evening, have the AI ​​edit it with the "Configure raw note" template. If there is a comment/prediction added by the AI ​​in the incoming text, mark it and remove it. Then, find out which area of ​​development you are under-observing with the "Missing area scan" and consciously observe that area the next day.
