Instructional Material Production: Presentation, Worksheet and Activity

If the plan is ready, it's time for the material: presentation, worksheet, activity instructions, sample text, reading passage, fill-in-the-blank, matching. These materials are the “meat” of the course; the student comes into contact with them. But it takes hours to prepare and most of it is repetitive formatting work. AI is incredibly fast at producing initial versions of material; You correct it, enrich it, and adapt it to your class. In this unit, we will cover material production from presentation to working paper. The limit does not change: The information, examples, quotes and visual suggestions produced by the AI ​​are verified by the teacher before being given to the class.

Material types and AI contribution

Presentation (slide) outline: AI divides a topic into headings, suggests 3-5 items for each slide, writes speaking notes. You visualize and simplify. Caution: too much text on the slide will overwhelm the student; Set limits for AI, such as "no more than 4 short bullet points per slide."

Worksheet: Fill in the blank, matching, short answer, problem set. The AI ​​can adjust the difficulty level and generate the answer key — but be sure to check the key (hallucination is common here).

Activity instructions: Group work, experiment, role play, discussion steps. AI writes clear, numbered instructions; You control feasibility and duration.

Sample text / reading passage: Original short texts suitable for a certain reading level and topic. Verify facts in the AI-generated text; Even if it is a fictional text, confirm the "real" claims in it.

Tip: Before producing the material, clarify the target audience: grade, age, reading level, duration. Instead of “Write simply,” say “For a 10-year-old student at an average reading level, in short sentences”; The output will be much more accurate.

Readability and age appropriateness

The most often overlooked aspect of the material is readability: sentence length, word difficulty, paragraph density, is it age appropriate? AI is very good at simplifying a text to a certain level. You can reprint the same content according to "age 8", "age 12", "high school level". This is also the basis for the next unit (differentiation).

Age appropriateness is not just a matter of language, but of example and context: concrete, daily-life examples rather than abstract examples at a young age; more critical contexts at older ages. If you give the age to the AI, it will select the samples accordingly.

Step by step: Material production with AI

  1. Give gain and level. Which achievement, which grade, which reading level.
  2. Specify material type and format. "6 slides", "10 questions worksheet", "3-stage group activity".
  3. Set boundaries. Number of items per slide, sentence length, duration, tone.
  4. Take the blueprint and ask for the key. If it is a worksheet, request the answer key separately.
  5. Verify. Facts, quotes, answer key, mathematical solutions — check them all.
  6. Adapt. Translate it into the language, examples, and culture of your own class; Check copyright/compliance.

three mini cases

Case 1 — Wrong answer key. A math teacher received a 10-question fraction worksheet and key from AI. While solving the key, he saw that the answers to 2 questions were wrong (the AI ​​had done the process wrong from the beginning). If he had distributed it to the student, he would have gotten 2 questions unfairly wrong. It took 8 minutes to decipher the key by hand, but it caught the error.

Case 2 — Readability adaptation. A classroom teacher was going to have the class read a science text, but the text was too heavy. He told AI to "rewrite this text in short sentences for a 9 year old, average reading level, retain the facts." The text has become simpler; The teacher checked that the facts were preserved and used them. The comprehension rate increased noticeably.

Case 3 — Image recommendation trap. A social studies teacher asked the AI ​​for visual suggestions for a presentation. Common mistakes

  • Not checking the answer key. AI may solve the problem incorrectly and generate the wrong key; Always verify manually.
  • Filling the slide with text. If you don't give the AI ​​an item limit, the slide turns into a book page.
  • Not stating age/level. Inappropriately difficult material either bores or overwhelms.
  • Bypassing image and quote copyrights. Images and fabricated quotes of unknown origin are both wrong and risky.
  • Forgetting to adapt. Using the AI ​​text as is; not translating it into the language and culture of the class.
Caution: An AI-generated reading passage may contain a fabricated fact, statistic, or quote that appears “real.” Verify numerical and historical claims, even in fictional text, before giving them to the student.
