Course Materials and Instructional Design: Outcome, Effectiveness and Measurement

One of the tasks that a Turkish Language and Literature teacher spends the most time on is preparing materials: lesson plans, worksheets, activities, exam questions, rubrics. This work is repetitive, formal, and time-consuming — so it's an area where AI can really speed up. In this unit, we will learn to use AI as an instructional design assistant (the work of establishing the objectives, activities and measurement of a course in a planned manner).

But the pedagogical decision, the suitability of the material for the student and the outcome, and the accuracy of the texts belong to you. AI can produce the skeleton of a working paper in minutes; But you are the teacher who decides whether that activity suits your class, level and achievement, and whether all the literary information in it is correct. AI produces blueprints; He is a person who teaches.

Start from gain

Good material starts with a clear outcome (a measurable behavior that the student is expected to be able to do by the end of the course), not with a fancy activity. "The student likes poetry" is not an achievement; cannot be measured. "The student explains the three figures of speech in the given poem with examples" is a measurable outcome. When making the AI ​​produce materials, you give the gain first; Don't make the gain match the AI.

Consider instructional design in four steps:

  1. Write down the gain. Measurable, level appropriate, one sentence.
  2. Set up the event. A task that serves gain and makes the student think.
  3. Design to measure. Question or rubric directly related to the outcome.
  4. Differentiate. Versions for the struggling and advanced student.
Hint: Tell the AI ​​to “produce events at 3 difficulty levels that serve this achievement.” Differentiation (varying tasks according to different levels of students) is a very time-consuming task, and AI really helps with that — but you confirm level appropriateness.

Text accuracy: hidden trap

The most dangerous mistake in a literary material is a false information: a fictitious publication date, a wrong author's name, a non-existent line, a confused movement. The AI ​​can produce these fluently and the material goes directly to the student. Therefore, every factual information in the material (date, name, title of work, quote) is definitely verified.

Be especially careful when placing a quote in the question stem: Do not include a quote that AI attributes to a work in the exam without confirming it verbatim from that work. Incorrect attribution both misleads the student and creates an exam that is open to objection.

Attention: If a "sample text" produced by AI does not belong to a real author, do not present it as "so-and-so's poem". Either use real, verified text, or make it clear that it's "example-generated text."

three mini cases

Case 1 — Worksheet reduced from 40 minutes to 10. A teacher drafted a 12-question reading comprehension paper for a story with AI. AI removed the skeleton in 10 minutes; The teacher changed 3 questions according to the level, corrected 1 incorrect fact and discarded one question. A clear time saving was achieved, quality remained in the hands of the teacher.

Case 2 — Wrong date caught. A teacher saw the year of a work on the literary history information card prepared by YZ. After confirming it from a reliable source, he realized that the date was wrong and corrected it. The card was saved before it went wrong with the student.

Case 4 — Level balance saved the exam. A teacher asked the AI ​​for a 10-question quiz; In the first draft, 8 questions were at the "remember" level. The teacher asked again, "Add 3 analysis questions, 2 evaluation questions, label each question with its level." The exam turned into a balanced tool that measured thinking, not memorization, and showed students' true level of understanding.

Case 3 — Rubric made the evaluation fair. A teacher received a draft of a 4-criteria rubric from YZ for essay evaluation. He arranged the criteria according to his own expectations. He evaluated 32 papers more consistently and quickly with this rubric; Scoring objections have decreased.

Four copyable templates

1) Activity related to gain:

Your role: experienced Turkish Language and Literature teacher. Benefits: [write your benefits]. Grade level: [level]. Suggest 3 activities that serve this outcome (easy/intermediate/advanced). For each activity: instruction, duration, required materials, and how it fits with the outcome. If you're using factual information, mark it as "must be verified." Made-up quote/dating.

2) Reading-comprehension questions:

Generate 8 questions based on the following text: 3 information, 3 interpretation, 2 inference questions. Also write down the expected answer for each question. Just rely on the text I gave you; asking for extra-textual information. If you are using quotes, take them verbatim from the text. Text: [paste text]

3) Rubric (graded scoring):

[Task type, e.g. A rubric with 4 criteria for poetry analysis. Define the "very good / good / should improve" levels for each criterion in concrete, observable terms. Suggest point weights but state that they are subject to change.

4) Differentiation:

Adapt the following activity to three levels: (1) enhanced version for the struggling student, (2) standard version, (3) deepened version for the advanced student. Maintain gains in all three.Activity: [write event]

Balancing question levels

A good measuring tool doesn't just ask "recall"; They examine different levels of thinking. A frequently used sequence in education grades questions according to depth of thinking: recall (recalling information: "What year was this work published?"), comprehension (paraphrasing: "Explain this line in your own words"), application (carrying information to a new example: "Use this figure of speech in another sentence"), analysis (breaking down and relating: "Compare the perspective of these two characters"), evaluation (reasoned judgment: "Do you think this ending fits the whole piece, and why?"), and creation (producing something new: “Write the rest of this story”).

Most AI questions tend to stay at the bottom two levels (remembering and understanding) if you don't limit them; because they are the easiest to produce. However, the real goal of literature education is at higher levels: interpreting, comparing, evaluating. Therefore, when having the AI ​​generate questions, ask for the level distribution explicitly: "Produce 3 analysis questions, 2 evaluation questions" etc. So you get a tool that both measures higher order thinking and actually exercises the student.

Hint: Tell the AI ​​to “give each question labeling what level of thinking it is at.” When you see the labels, you can understand at a glance whether your exam is blocked at a low level and establish the balance yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Matching the gain to the AI. You put the gain first; Let the material serve him.
  • Failure to verify factual information. Date, name, quote goes directly to the student; Confirmation is required.
  • Attributing a fabricated text to the real author. If it is an example text, say "it is an example".
  • Ignoring the level. The AI's default level may not suit your class.
  • Taking the rubric without thinking. Adjust the criteria according to your own expectations.

In summary

AI provides a real and big time saving in preparing course material: plan skeleton, question outline, rubric, differentiation. But the teacher determines the achievement, level, pedagogical appropriateness and factual accuracy. Start from the acquisition, verify every factual information, do not present the made-up text as fact, and rework the material for your class.

Application task

Write an outcome (measurable, one sentence). Get three levels of effectiveness from AI with the “Efficiency based on gain” template. Evaluate whether each activity actually serves the outcome; Choose one and organize it for your own class. If it contains factual information (date, name, quote), verify each with a reliable source.
