Asset and Visual Production: Concept Art, 2D/3D and Texture
The appearance of a game determines much of the first impression; But art is the most expensive and slowest link in the production line. An asset is every image, model, texture, or sound file in the game: a character model, a terrain texture, an UI icon, a piece of concept art. Generative visual AI (models that produce images from text prompts) accelerates this field: concept art discovery, reference/mood board creation, texture generation, icon and interface experimentation, variation reproduction. But this is not to replace the artist, but to accelerate the artist; and the royalty dimension is with you every step of the way.
In this unit, you will learn how to use AI in visual asset production; With concept, you will learn the difference between production art, maintaining a consistent art direction, texture and interface production, and copyright-safe workflow.
Concept art and production art: critical distinction
This is the most important distinction. Concept art is a visual that is produced to explore an idea, seek direction, and inspire the team, but does not directly enter the game. Production art is the asset that is actually used in the game and meets the technical requirements (resolution, format, transparency, tileable texture, polygon budget). AI is very powerful at the concept stage: it offers dozens of directional experiments within minutes. At the production stage, direct output is often not enough — due to technical requirements, consistency and copyright, the artist takes the AI output as a reference and reproduces or heavily corrects it.
Step by step visual workflow:
- Describe art direction (palette, style, mood, references).
- Do concept exploration (generate and select multiple directions with AI).
- Fix the selected direction (style guide — create style guide).
- Move to Production (artist reproduces/corrects, adapts to technical requirement).
- Copyright and consistency check (is it original, does it fit the set).
Tip: When asking the AI for visuals, play on a set of aspects, not just one image: "trying 6 different silhouettes/palettes of the same character". The goal is to search widely to find the right one, not settle for the first output.
Consistent art direction: the hardest part
The biggest weakness of generative visual is inconsistency: the same character looks different in two productions, entities on the same set do not feel like they belong to the same world. Create a style guide to manage this: palette codes, line thickness, light direction, detail density, perspective. Repeat this guide as context for each production prompt. Consistency is more valuable than individual beautiful visuals — the game as a whole must be believable.
Attention: Copyright. If a generative model's output imitates the signature style of a well-known artist, copyrighted character, or trademark, using that output in commercial product risks infringement. Also verify that the license for the tool you are using allows commercial use and ownership of the output. Avoid prompts like “in the style of such-and-such artist”; instead describe it in concrete visual qualities (palette, light, line).
Texture, icon and interface
AI; It is practical for producing tilable textures (stone, wood, metal surfaces), icon sets, interface elements and backgrounds. Technical points to consider here: textures must be tileable, icons must be of consistent weight and size, and the interface must have readable contrast. Clearly state these technical requirements to the AI; test the output in real context in the engine.
How does the role of the artist change?
The most misunderstood aspect of production with AI is the fear that the artist becomes "redundant." The truth is the opposite: AI accelerates the repetitive and exploratory part, not the craft work of the artist. The role increasingly shifts from “hand-drawing each pixel” to “setting the direction, making the selection, customizing the AI output, and driving it to technical quality.” This requires greater, not less, competence: a good eye for reference, a strong sense of artistic direction and the ability to adapt techniques. Think of AI like an intern — fast and tireless but directionless; You are the master who guides, selects and polishes it.
Another practical fact: AI output is often a beginning of composition, not the finished work. Experienced artists take the AI output as a draft layer and add their own drawings, corrections and signatures on it (paint-over technique). This strengthens both quality, originality, and—as we will see in Unit 10—copyrightability. In other words, the best results with AI come from the flow of "produce, select, add human contribution to it", not "produce and use".
three mini cases
Case 1 — Concept discovery accelerated. An art team would normally spend 2 weeks finding the atmosphere of a new world. He produced 120 mood/concept essays with AI in 3 days and presented 5 aspects; The art director chose one, and the team moved into manual production from there. The speed of discovery increased, the quality decision remained with the human.
Case 2 — Consistency problem and solution. One team individually produced 40 item icons with AI; none of them felt like they belonged on the same set (different line, different lighting). Once I defined and reproduced a style guide (fixed palette, light direction, line thickness), the set became consistent; Players gave feedback that "the interface is neat".
Case 3 — Return on copyright risk. A designer produced hero images "in the style of a famous artist" and liked them. Legal counsel warned: this ran the risk of imitating that artist's style in commercial product. The prompt was rewritten with concrete visual qualities (cool palette, harsh light, bold contour) and the artist added hand drawing on the image; It was both original and safe.

- Putting concept output directly into production. It is risky due to technical and copyright reasons.
- Producing without a style guide. Beings do not feel like they belong to the same world.
- Asking "in the style of so-and-so artist." It creates a risk of copyright infringement.
