Message Strategy and Value Proposition: The Right Word to the Right Person

In the previous unit, we determined who we were addressing (target audience and persona). Now we will decide what to say to that person. At the heart of the words spoken in the advertisement is the value proposition: a statement that clearly expresses the concrete benefit the product offers to the target audience and why it should be preferred over its competitors. The value proposition is not a slogan; is the logic behind the slogan. It is the essence of the sentence "You should buy this product because it gives you this and no one else can do it this well."

There is a critical distinction here: feature versus benefit. The specification is what the product is ("the motor of this drill is 800 watts"). The benefit is what it does for the customer (“it penetrates the wall effortlessly, the job is not interrupted”). People don't buy features, they buy benefits. The famous saying sums it up: "People buy the hole in the wall, not the drill." In this unit, artificial intelligence is a powerful assistant in establishing message matrices, turning features into benefits, and adapting the same message to different segments and channels. But the rule that every claim must be based on evidence and legislation does not change.

Message hierarchy: neither before nor after

You can't say everything at once in an ad. Message hierarchy is the order that determines which messages are main and which are supporting. There is one main message at the top (what the audience should remember). There are 2-3 supporting messages underneath that make it believable. At the bottom is the evidence (numbers, certifications, user experience). If this pyramid is clear, it will be advertising-oriented; If it's not clear, the message falls apart and nothing sticks.

There is also the purchasing phase. The same person needs a different message when discovering the product and a different message when making a decision. Attracting attention and reminding of the problem during the discovery phase; show difference and evidence at the evaluation stage; It is necessary to give confidence and a motivation for action at the decision stage. This is called a funnel in marketing: the path from broad awareness to narrow purchase.

Tip: A single message for the same product is not enough. Prepare separate messages for at least the “discovery,” “evaluation,” and “decision” phases; AI would be very useful in rapidly replicating this trilogy.

Step by step: from value proposition to message matrix

Step 1 — List features. Write the concrete features of the product.

Step 2 — Turn every feature into a benefit. "What use is this to me?" Ask the question for each feature. Give the feature list to AI and have it translate the benefits.

Step 3 — Distill the core value proposition. Boil the strongest benefit down to a one-sentence value proposition.

Step 4 — Set up message matrix. Let the rows be personas and the columns be purchasing stages; appropriate message for that person and that stage in each cell.

Step 5 — Connect each claim to evidence. Make sure there is concrete evidence (data, testing, certification) behind every promise in the matrix; Remove what is not there.

Be careful: every benefit is based on evidence. Benefit without evidence is the risk of misleading advertising.

three mini cases

Case 1 — Moving from feature to benefit. A software brand was listing features like "256-bit encryption, multi-factor authentication" in its ads, and conversion was low. They gave the feature list to AI and asked for benefit translation. Benefit-oriented messages such as "Your data is private to you, no one can access it" appeared. When the ad was translated into this language, the click-through rate among non-technical audiences increased significantly. AI translated, the team verified.

Case 2 — Message by stage. An online course brand was telling everyone to "sign up now" and conversion of new visitors was very low. They divided the message into funnel stages: “it is possible to change career” in discovery, “job placement rate of our graduates” in evaluation, “flexible payment on registration this week” in decision. Conversion increased when the same product was presented to three stages with three messages.

Case 3 — The cost of a promise without evidence. A food supplement brand wanted to use the message suggested by AI: "it strengthens immunity, you won't get sick." This claim was both unprovable and contrary to health claim legislation. The team noticed this and changed it to a legally compliant, measured wording. Lesson: The powerful promise proposed by AI cannot be a message without going through evidence and regulatory scrutiny.

Four copyable templates

1) Feature-benefit converter:

Mark the benefit for which there is no evidence as "evidence required"; exaggeration.

2) Value proposition distiller:

Weak prompt:

Write a compelling marketing message for my product.

No mass, no stages, no benefits and no evidence; The output may shift to exaggerated and unsubstantiated claims.

Powerful prompt:

Product: accounting software for small businesses. Audience: Business owners of 1-5 people, who do not understand accounting, do not have time. Main benefit: "It automates invoice and VAT tracking, reduces the risk of penalties." Evidence: the average declaration preparation time of users decreases from 3 hours to 25 minutes. Task: write a message for the discovery, evaluation and decision stages. State the evidence underlying each message. Do not make any claims without evidence; Don't give certainty like "you won't be penalized".

The second claim gives the benefit, evidence, and stage; The output goes through assertion checking again.

Common mistakes

  • Counting features, not mentioning benefits. The audience searches for the answer to the question "what will this bring to me?"
  • Giving the same message to every stage. Telling the scout to "buy it now" is premature and ineffective.
  • Making promises without evidence. Every claim creates the burden of proof; Without evidence it would be misleading advertising.
  • Saying everything without establishing the message hierarchy. If the main message is unclear, nothing will stick.
  • Bypassing the regulated area. Health, financial, food declarations are subject to special rules; AI doesn't always know this.
Attention: Every benefit you say in the advertisement is a promise that you can prove if necessary. A strong sentence without evidence is not strong but risky.

In summary

Message strategy is the art of saying the right thing to the right person and has a value proposition at its heart. Turning the feature into a benefit, placing the message in a hierarchy and adapting it according to the purchasing stage are the basis of effective advertising. AI is a quick aid in feature-benefit translation, value proposition distillation, and message matrix construction. However, every claim must be based on evidence and legislation; Strong but unproven promises offered by AI cannot be used without inspection. There should always be evidence behind the benefit statement.

Application task

Choose a product. (1) List its concrete features and convert each into a benefit with a “feature-benefit converter”; Write evidence of each benefit. (2) Generate 5 candidates with the “value proposition distiller” and select one. (3) Establish a “message matrix” for two personas and three phases. (4) Run all messages through the "claim checker" template and flag those without evidence or risky. (5) Rewrite at least one strong but unsubstantiated claim into measured and defensible language.
