Individual activities are valuable, but to support a child's development systematically, they must be brought together under one roof: an individual development and support plan. This plan is a road map that sets measurable goals based on the child's current level, lists activities and strategies to achieve these goals, monitors progress, and is reviewed regularly. In schools, the official form of this is known as an IEP (Individualized Education Programme); In early intervention, individual support plans are prepared with a similar logic. In this unit, we will cover how to draft the plan with AI support, how to sharpen goals according to SMART criteria, and how to adapt the plan with the family.
Let's put the backbone of the plan first. A good support plan includes the following sections: current performance level (what the child can do now, in which area support is needed), long-term goal (what is desired to be achieved at the end of a term), short-term measurable goals (intermediate steps to the goal), strategy and activities, data collection method (how progress will be measured), those responsible (expert, family, teacher) and review date. AI quickly fills out this skeleton; But it is your job to make the goals realistic, measurable, and specific to that child.
SMART goals and the role of artificial intelligence
The heart of a support plan is goals; A poorly written goal makes even a good plan useless. SMART criteria are used to sharpen goals: S (Specific) — what exactly, no ambiguity. M (Measurable) — can be tracked by number, frequency or percentage. A (Achievable) — realistic for the child's current level. R (Relevant) — appropriate to the child's actual needs and priorities. T (Time-bound) — within a period of time. For example, "let his speech improve" is not SMART; “Within 8 weeks, verbally express 5 different two-word simple requests in daily routines (measured by observation record)” is a SMART goal.
Based on current performance and overall goal, AI produces a draft plan and list of goals. But the AI-generated goals are often either too vague (“increase social skills”), too ambitious (unrealistic jump in 8 weeks), or unrelated to the child's current level. Your job is to filter each goal through the SMART filter.

Beware: AI sometimes suggests impressive-sounding but unachievable goals. Unattainable goals doom the child and family to failure and reduce motivation. Always adjust the goal to be the "next realistic step" based on the child's current performance.
Keeping the plan alive: data and revision cycle
A support plan is not a document that is written once and put in a drawer; It is a living cycle. Goals are set, implemented, progress data collected (how often, at what level), reviewed at regular intervals and revised if necessary. In this cycle, AI helps in producing data collection templates and progress summary drafts; but the decision to change the goal, reprioritize with the family, and own the plan rests with the professional. AI is not the plan owner, but the draft assistant.
Tip: Next to each goal, rewrite the “how will I measure” column (e.g. “How many times did he do it in 10 tries”). If the measurement method is unclear, the target is also unclear; The "M" of SMART is controlled from here.
Family involvement determines the success of the plan. Home is the environment where the child spends the most time; A plan that the family cannot implement remains on paper. So adapt the plan with the family to suit their routine and resources; Use language that empowers them, not blames them (we will delve deeper into this in unit 7).

three mini cases
Case 1 — Turning vague goal into SMART. The AI draft gives the goal of "developing the child's language". With the second prompt, the expert rewrites the child's current level (approximately 20 words, no two-word sentences) by adding: "Within 6 weeks, use at least 4 different two-word request sentences in daily routines; measured by weekly observation record." Now the target is trackable and realistic.
Case 2 — Overly ambitious goal. AI recommends a goal of "reading simple words in 8 weeks" for a 4-year-old child who does not yet know a single letter. The expert checks the realism with the 3rd prompt; this is a leap. It takes the target to a realistic intermediate step such as "Distinguish and say 3 letter sounds in 8 weeks". The child experiences success and motivation is maintained.
Case 3 — Adaptation with family. The specialist prepares a plan for fine motor that includes 20 minutes of desk work per day. The family is a busy one with two children; cannot spare this time. The expert plan adapts to the family's routine: embedding skills in natural opportunities such as rolling out dough in meal preparation, folding laundry, etc. The plan is now actually feasible; Progress data is collected with the simple table filled by the family (4th prompt).

Common mistakes
- Writing vague goals: Not "let it improve", but a measurable and timely goal.
- Overly ambitious goal: Unattainable goal creates failure and demotivation.
- Skipping the measurement method: A target cannot be monitored if it is not written how to measure it.
- Leaving the plan static: Without a data-revision cycle, the plan dies.
- Leaving the family out: The plan that the family cannot implement remains on paper.
