Traditionally, this phase involves sketching, collage, and reference gathering and takes days. AI tools that produce images from text (text-to-image; software that converts the recipe you write into images) reduce this discovery phase to minutes. But there's a big danger here: an impressive AI visual feels like an actual design decision. In this unit you will learn how to use AI as a powerful inspiration engine in concept and visual production, but also how to separate it from actual design and technical accuracy.
The logic of visual generating tools
Text-to-image tools have learned from millions of image-text pairs. You write a recipe (prompt); The tool "imagines" an image that most closely resembles this description. The result is often atmospherically strong but geometrically and structurally unreliable. Columns may stand in space, storey heights may not match, and the same façade may appear different twice. Because the tool does not understand the architecture; it just produces "pictures that look like this".
So the correct use of AI visual is: to explore a feeling, a light, a material atmosphere. The wrong way to use it is to see it as a measured project drawing or a workable design.
Caution: AI visual is a concept/atmosphere work. It does not guarantee scale, structure and material feasibility. Make this clear when presenting to the client; It is misleading to present it as a project that will be implemented exactly.
Components of a good visual prompt
Instead of a random sentence, a layered recipe gives much more useful results. A good prompt includes the following components:
- Building type and function: boutique hotel, cultural center, rural house.
- Architectural language/atmosphere: brutalist, organic, minimalist, vernacular.
- Material and texture: cut stone, wood veneer, glass and steel.
- Light and time: golden hour, foggy morning, night illumination.
- Context: hillside land, seaside, within historical texture.
- Gaze and framing: eye level, bird's eye view, indoor perspective.
- Technical nature: photorealistic, sketch, model view.
Step by step: concept exploration
- Write the intention. Clarify your design intent in one sentence before the image: “a quiet structure that draws in light, embedded in the landscape.”
- Set up the first recipe. Write a prompt with the above components.
- Generate variants. Try the same intention 4-6 times with different materials/atmosphere.
- Sort it out. Put aside the technical nonsense (impossible structure); Choose the feeling that inspires.
- Translate to design. Bring the atmosphere you choose to your own sketches, models and real geometry.
- Save the source and method. Separate which image is AI and which is your drawing.
Tip: Never paste the AI visual directly into the project sheet. Keep it on a reference board under “inspiration” and visually separate it from your actual design drawings.

Case 1 — Atmospheric exploration. An office is looking for a concept for a 220 m² rural house on hillside land. The architect produces approximately 40 visuals with 8 different prompt variants. 6 of them contain impossible structures and are eliminated. Among the remaining ones, the atmosphere of "buried into the land, single-pitched roof, local stone" is distinguished. This atmosphere guides the architect; But the plan and section are drawn from scratch, by hand, with real elevations. The concept phase goes from 3 days to half a day.
Case 2 — Material instability. In a boutique hotel, the facade material is being discussed: wood, stone or terracotta? The architect produces the same mass with three materials and shows them side by side to the customer. The customer decides on terractoad in 10 minutes. But the architect clearly says: "These images are for atmosphere; the actual joint, detail and cost will be studied separately."
Case 3 — Risk of misleading expectations. An architect presents an impressive interior visual as "here is your home". In the visual, the ceiling height is 4.5 m, but in the real project, 2.8 m is possible due to zoning and floor height. The customer is subsequently disappointed. Lesson: the image should always be presented with the note "concept, scale not binding".

A strong prompt conveys a feeling and intention; A weak prompt leaves the tool blank and produces a generic, cliché result.
Royalty and honesty
AI visuals are learned from other works; It can reproduce exactly the signature style of a well-known architect. Presenting this as an original product is risky in terms of copyright and ethics. In addition, it is a requirement of honesty to say "this is an AI concept study" when presenting an AI visual to the customer. Using visuals instead of technical drawings, for example, giving dimensions, is a serious mistake.

Common mistakes
