Artificial intelligence (AI for short; software that learns patterns from data and produces text, images or code) is a very powerful accelerator in this chain: generating concepts, writing text, laying out tables, drafting code. But AI is not an architect; He doesn't take responsibility, he doesn't go on the field, he doesn't sign. In this unit, you will learn where to use AI in architectural work, where to stop, and how to validate each output. The goal is to make you a professional controlling AI, not dependent on AI.
What AI can and cannot do in architecture
The real power of AI is in generating languages, patterns and variants. A moodboard idea, a field program draft, a technical specification skeleton, a meeting note summary, a bill of quantities layout are created in seconds. AI will save you hours on these tasks.
What AI cannot do is technical decision making, which requires responsibility. The cross-section of a column, the reinforcement of a beam, a fire escape distance, the actual development right of a land, the bearing capacity of a soil; None of this can be determined by the logic of "this is how it usually happens." AI hallucinates because it learns from texts on the internet: that is, it can make up an item number, ratio, or value that appears real but is false. In architecture, this type of error is not just a typo; It means life safety, license denial or serious cost.
Attention: The AI output is a draft, not an expert opinion. No safety-critical decisions (carrier system, fire, life safety, ground) can be implemented without the approval of a competent architect and engineer. AI does not replace this consent.
Three regions according to risk level
The most practical way to use AI safely is to divide each task into three zones based on risk level. This distinction quickly and accurately answers the question “should AI do this?”

Be fast in the green zone. Use AI in the yellow zone, but confirm every number and source. In the red zone, AI never has the final say; It is merely an aid that speeds up the expert's work.
Multi-layer verification discipline
Verification is not something to be postponed thinking "I'll check it out later"; is part of the workflow. A solid verification consists of five layers:
- Return to the source. If AI has given a rate, item or value, open and confirm it in the current official text (zoning plan note, regulation, standard, manufacturer's certificate).
- Independent account. Recalculate a numerical result (area, meters, cost) yourself or with validated software.
- Test it with measure. Compare geometry, scale and distance claims with actual project drawing.
- Expert eye. If the relevant decision is in the expertise of a discipline (statics, mechanics, electricity, fire), have it approved by that expert.
- Leave your mark. Record which output was validated and how; Let it be checked later.
Hint: "AI said" is not a justification. The justification for an architectural decision is always the applicable regulation, calculation, measurement or competent expert approval. AI helps you prepare these justifications, it does not replace them.
Privacy, copyright and ethics
Architectural data is sensitive. An unpublished competition project, customer identity, land coordinate, tender figure; All of these are covered by trade secret or copyright. Before giving this data to a cloud-based AI tool, ask three questions: Is this data really necessary? Can it be anonymized? Does the tool I use use data in training?
Copyright is a separate issue. An image produced by AI can exactly mimic the style of a well-known architect. Presenting this as an original product is both an ethical and legal risk. Use the AI visual as a tool for internal inspiration, then translate it into your own unique design language and be honest about the source.
Step by step: Introducing AI safely into a task
- Place the task in the region. Green, yellow or red?
- Anonymize context. Clear real name, coordinate and number.
- Give a clear brief. Write the constraints, goal, and format clearly.
- Consider the output a draft. Never use it like the final product.
- Apply layers of verification. Source, calculation, measure, expert, trace.
- Record the decision and its reasoning.

Common mistakes
- Mistaking AI output for expert opinion. AI produces drafts, not decisions.
- Delegating safety-critical decision making to AI. The carrier, the fire, the ground are never left to the AI.
- Using numbers without verifying the source. Every rate, item and value must be confirmed from the official source.
- Uploading sensitive data directly. Anonymization and safe tool selection should not be neglected.
- Not noticing the hallucination. While AI may seem confident, it can be wrong; A sure statement is not a proof of truth.
