In written translation, you can go back and correct it; In interpreting, you capture the moment, you cannot take it back. When translating simultaneously with a speaker at a conference, you need to find the right term in seconds. That's why the real work in interpreting begins in the preparation, not in the cabin. In this unit, you will learn the types of interpreting, the powerful role of AI in the preparation phase, the limits of AI in the live sequence, and the confidentiality-ethics line. The aim is to position the AI correctly as a “readiness assistant” and not a “cabin companion”.
Basic concepts
Interpreting is the instantaneous transfer of spoken speech into another language. Two main forms: consecutive interpreting — speaker stops, interpreter interprets; It is based on note-taking technique. Simultaneous interpreting — the interpreter interprets almost simultaneously as the speaker speaks; It is usually done in a soundproof booth (booth) with headphones. A sub-form is whispered interpreting (chuchotage)—the interpreter interprets in a low voice to one or two people.
A critical concept: preparation / glossary. The translator studies the speakers' presentations, subject area, institutional jargon and terminology before the event; prepares a personal glossary. The more technical the event (medical convention, legal hearing, engineering summit), the greater the importance of preparation.
Why is AI valuable here? Because preparation is a voluminous and time-pressured reading-research task, and it is the area where AI is strongest: summarizing long reports, extracting terms from the speaker's past speeches, quickly building a concept map of a field, producing term pairs in two languages.
Tip: If you do not have time to read a 200-page technical document with 3 days until the event, first create a concept-term map and summary per speech with AI; Then, using this map as a guide, study the critical parts of the source documents in depth yourself. AI guides your reading, not replaces it.
Preparation flow with AI
A powerful step-by-step preparation:
- Field and context briefing: Give the AI the topic of the event, the participants and the agenda and draw up an overview and possible discussion axes.
- Term pair generation: Extract bilingual glossaries from subject documents (source term → target term → brief definition). You confirm this, note the names that are difficult to pronounce, and open the abbreviations.
- Speaker preparation: Learn the speaker's style, frequently used expressions, possible jokes and references from his previous speeches/presentations, if any.
- Scenario rehearsal: Prepare possible questions and answers, numerical data, institution names and titles in advance; number and proper noun are the most difficult to translate live.
- Pronunciation and abbreviation list: Create a quick-look card for difficult names, unfamiliar terms, and abbreviations.
AI in live order: limits
Be clear here: simultaneous translation is not done by relying on AI. Reasons: (1) latency — passing the conversation to the AI and waiting for a response kills concurrency; (2) error — live ASR stumbles on noise/accent/aliasing and you have no way to correct it; (3) privacy — many meetings are private, giving the audio to an outside service is a violation; (4) context and tone — the AI cannot see the gesture, the mood of the room, the irony.
AI's legitimate place in the live environment is limited: quick access to your preparation cards, supplementing your notes in consecutive translation if necessary, post-event transcription/summary. Live translation itself belongs to the translator. Additionally, machine interpreting tools (live MT) can be helpful in some low-stakes, informal situations; but it is not a substitute for a human interpreter in official, legal, medical or diplomatic environments.
Caution: Feeding the audio of a meeting to an anonymous live translation/transcription application without permission is a serious privacy and sometimes legal violation. The translator's duty of confidentiality is the basis of the profession; maintain this line even in preparation and sight-reading.
three mini cases
Case 1 — Prep glossary saved the cabinet. A translator created a 240-term bilingual glossary with AI before a 2-day cardiology congress, marking 30 drug names that were difficult to pronounce. Thanks to this preparation, no problems were experienced in the cabin; If he had entered unprepared, he would have been blocked in a few critical terms.
Case 2 — Speaker style was practiced from the front. A translator had AI condensers of three of the keynote speaker's old speeches on YouTube learn his frequently used phrases and two recurring jokes. When the speaker at the event made the same joke, he translated it fluently with a prepared response; An unprepared interpreter would pause at the joke.
Case 3 — Confidentiality boundary maintained. A translator wanted to use a "live transcription" app during a secret merger meeting, but decided against it when he realized the audio would leak out. Instead he just used his own preparation cards; Confidentiality was maintained, there was no breach.

Common mistakes
- Reducing preparation to an AI brief. Summary gives direction; You must study the source documents yourself.
- Relying on AI for live simultaneous translation. It doesn't work due to lag, errors, and privacy.
- Outputting the audio of the secret meeting to an external device. Serious privacy/legal violation.
- Not preparing numbers and proper names in advance. The place where live translation gets stuck most often.
- Skipping pronunciations and abbreviations. One difficult name in the cabin disrupts the flow.
Remote interpreting (RSI) and technical preparation
With the age of AI, RSI (Remote Simultaneous Interpreting) has become widespread: the interpreter translates through a software platform, from home or from a center, instead of in a physical booth. This adds two new layers to the preparation. The first is technical preparation: solid internet, quality headphones-microphone, quiet environment, pre-testing the platform (audio delay, changing channels, changing hands with the partner interpreter). A technical glitch becomes an irreparable interruption in live translation. Second, voice quality dependency: in RSI, the interpreter hears the speaker's voice only digitally; bad microphone, low bandwidth or overlapping sounds are more challenging than in the booth. Therefore, asking speakers to use good equipment in preparation for RSI directly affects the quality of the interpretation.
RSI also requires extra caution in terms of privacy: make sure the platform used is secure, whether the session is recorded and how the data is processed. Be aware that if AI-enabled automatic captioning or transcription features are turned on, they may lead to data leakage in a confidential meeting. While technology provides convenience, the translator's obligation to keep confidentiality never changes.
In summary
In interpreting, work is done in preparation, not in the booth, and this is where AI's strongest contribution is: field briefing, bilingual glossary, speaker tone, number and proper name cards save hours in preparation. But live simultaneous interpretation itself — due to latency, error, confidentiality, and context — belongs to the human interpreter, and the audio of the secret meeting is not given to outside means. Position AI as a staging assistant, not a cabin mate.
Application task
Set yourself an example event scenario (a tech summit, for example). Get an overview of the field with the “event briefing” template, create and confirm a list of at least 30 terms with the “bilingual glossary” template, and mark hard-to-pronounce names. Then remove the "number and proper name card" from a sample speech text. Try translating a 2-minute conversation with these cards and note which preparation works best.
