The choice of materials and furniture largely determines the character, comfort, durability and cost of an interior. An incorrect floor material will slide in wet areas; The wrong fabric will wear out quickly with intensive use; An incorrect furniture size will not fit into the space. In this unit we will see how to use AI in material and furniture discovery, comparison and documentation, but why the actual sample, technical sheet and supply reality still determine the final choice.
The biggest risk of AI here is hallucination: it can produce a non-existent product name, a made-up spec, or a false price. AI is the “discovery and pre-screening” tool here, as the material decision has physical and contractual consequences; It is not the "exact product source".
Step by step: from need to choice
Step 1 — Define performance criteria. Clarify the requirement for each surface: intensity of use (domestic / commercial), wet/dry environment, ease of cleaning, durability, slip resistance, fire behavior, acoustics. The material must be "appropriate" before it can be "beautiful".
Step 2 — Material family discovery. Give AI the criteria and extract candidate material families (e.g. “for heavy-use commercial flooring: LVT, ceramic, epoxy, microconcrete”) and the pros/cons of each.
Step 3 — Comparison chart. Compare candidates on common criteria: durability, maintenance, cost range, difficulty of application, aesthetics.
Step 4 — Actual product matching. Match the AI suggested family with the actual supplier catalogue. This step belongs to the designer; Never directly trust the product name given by the AI.
Step 5 — Physical sample and technical sheet. Make the final decision by holding the sample in your hand, seeing it in the light, and reading the manufacturer's technical data sheet (the official document containing measurement, material, performance and maintenance information of a product).
Tip: Ask AI not "which product should I buy?", but rather "which material family and which performance criteria are important for this use, what should I pay attention to?" AI is strong at the family and criterion level; Validation at brand/product level is a must.
Critical concept: verification of specification
Some of the material choices are safety-critical and can never be left to the AI:
- Fire class (classification showing the behavior of a material against combustion, e.g. A1, B, C): There are mandatory classes in escape routes and public spaces.
- Slip resistance (slip safety on wet surfaces, e.g. R classes): Critical in wet areas and on stairs.
- VOC / emissions (volatile organic compounds released into the air by the material): Important for indoor air quality.
- Load bearing / strength: Shelving, suspended ceiling, heavy furniture connections.
These values are taken only from the manufacturer's certified technical data sheet and the applicable regulation. AI can recall these, but it is not the source document.
Attention: YZ saying "this fabric is fireproof class" or "this floor is R11 non-slip" is not proof. Only the manufacturer's certification and applicable regulation verify a safety-critical feature. An incorrect fire class means risk to life on an escape route.
three mini cases
Case 1 — Preliminary days shortened. A designer gave AI the criteria for a heavy-use restaurant floor (commercial density, wet cleaning, non-slip, medium budget) and compared 5 material families pro/minus. LVT and porcelain ceramics came to the fore. This preliminary round was reduced to half a day; The designer then asked for samples from two real suppliers and confirmed the R class from the leaflet.
Case 2 — Counterfeit product caught. YZ suggested a very specific product for a bathroom: "XYZ brand, R12 non-slip, antibacterial porcelain, 240 TL per m²". The designer looked at the brand's catalog: there was neither such a series nor this price; AI had attached fictitious features and price to the real brand name. Replaced with a similar product from the actual catalogue.
Case 3 — The sample was different in the light. The AI and supplier image showed a “warm walnut” tone for a piece of furniture. The physical sample appeared grayish and cold in the cold LED lighting of the venue. Thanks to the sample, the designer foresaw the need to change either the color temperature of the lighting or the tone of the coating; Switched to warm white lighting.

Use of powerful prompt gives risks, priorities and budget; it also limits AI against fabrication.
Size and ergonomics in furniture selection
Two things come before aesthetics in furniture: size (fitting into the space and usage area) and ergonomics (suitability for the human body and use). AI may say that a chair is "stylish", but physical size and ergonomic rules determine whether the seating height of that chair is suitable for an elderly user or whether it supports the elbow angle of a desk (we will deepen ergonomics in unit 9). When choosing furniture, get style and type suggestions from YZ, and test the size and ergonomics with your own data.

Common mistakes
- Trusting the product name. Putting the brand/model/price produced by AI into the presentation without verifying it.
- Just asking about the security feature. Not confirming the fire/slip class from the leaflet.
- Decision without sample. Choosing color and texture just from the screen; not to try it in the light of the place.
- Putting aesthetics first. Selecting the material based on visuality without questioning its suitability for use (density, wetness).
- Forgetting the supply. Choosing the "ideal" product without taking into account delivery time, stock and budget.
