Concept expectation on one side, measurement sketch on the other side; On the one hand, the material catalog, and on the other hand, the passage widths that must be left in accordance with the regulation. Interior architecture (the profession that designs and implements an interior space in balance of function, aesthetics, comfort, security and budget) by its nature requires quickly producing and eliminating many options, convincing with visuals and bringing together technical reality and imagination. Artificial intelligence (AI - software that can learn patterns from past data and produce or classify text, visuals, plans and ideas) accelerates you in this abundance of options and time pressure. But the very beginning of this module is clear: AI is an idea multiplier, blueprint generator and visualization assistant; You are the competent designer who confirms the safety of the space, its compliance with the regulations, the authenticity of the material and the promise made to the customer.
In this first unit we will focus on discipline, not the tool. You will learn where AI saves real time in the interior design workflow, where it is dangerous, how to verify each output, how to protect customer data, and which decision you can never leave to AI. Without laying this foundation, subsequent units remain up in the air — because in interior design, an unverified image can be not just a beautiful lie, but a promise that cannot be implemented, a budget exceeded, or a safety rule violated.
Where does AI come in handy in the interior design workflow?
Let's divide things into two big piles. First cluster: idea generation, visualization and repetitive production tasks. Creating dozens of variations of a concept, collecting color and texture suggestions for a moodboard (an inspiration board that summarizes the atmosphere of a design with color, texture, material and reference images), producing a render of an empty room (a realistic-looking computer image of a space) as a quick draft, writing material names and description texts, preparing a presentation text for the customer, visualizing the style alternatives of a furniture. In these tasks, AI reduces hours to minutes and produces variation without getting tired.
The second cluster: decisions that determine the reality, security and contractual value of the space. Whether a passage is sufficient for a wheelchair, whether the ventilation and waterproofing of a wet area are solved correctly, whether a material is really fire resistant, whether a quantity survey (a measurement-based calculation of the amount of material to be used in the space) meets the budget, whether a load-bearing wall can be removed or not. These decisions require expertise, measured data and applicable regulations. Here the AI generates options and drafts — but the final signature is yours.
Let's clarify the distinction in one sentence: AI is strong on questions of "what might this space look like and what options are there"; The decision is yours when it comes to questions such as "Is this design really feasible, safe and affordable?"
Tip: Before outsourcing a job to an AI, ask: “What do I lose if this output is wrong?” If the answer is “a few minutes of revisualization,” feel free to delegate. If the answer is "wrong manufacturing, exceeded budget, violated regulations or security risk", let the AI produce the draft and you make the decision and verification.
Critical distinction: representation (visual) versus reality (implementation)
The biggest pitfall of AI in interior architecture is this: AI can produce a convincing visual, but that visual may be physically impossible. AI can make a room sparkle; However, that window cannot be opened to that facade at that size. It can make a kitchen look perfect; However, that counter height is not ergonomic, that cabinet will collide with that door, and there will be no passage behind that island. AI produces hallucinations — that is, it presents a non-existent product, an impossible connection, a non-existent regulation, or a made-up material feature as real. A visual that looks impressive in a presentation hits a wall in practice.
So the golden rule: AI visual is a communication and discovery tool, not a target. What will be applied is your measured drawing and technical detail. When showing the AI rendering to the customer, clearly explain that this is an "atmosphere representation" and that the exact product and dimensions will be determined in the technical project.
Verification discipline: three steps
AI produces fluidly and confidently; That doesn't mean it's true. Apply a three-step reflex to each output:
- Connect it to size and space. Test every arrangement the AI produces against your real measurements. "This seat is 240 cm, the wall is 300 cm; is there a 60 cm passage next to it?" Calculate it yourself. Visual scale is misleading.
- Verify source and authenticity. If AI suggests a material, product or regulation clause, verify it with the manufacturer's technical data sheet, current catalog or applicable regulation. AI saying "this fabric is fireproof class" is not evidence.
- Pass it through regulation and security filters. The decision on critical issues such as passage width, ceiling height, ventilation, fire escape and accessibility is not in AI, but in the current legislation and you. If you are not sure, consult the relevant expert (static, mechanical, electrical).
Caution: "The AI designed it that way" is not a justification and has no force in a contract. If there is a wrong measurement, an impractical detail, or a security rule that is violated, the responsibility belongs not to the AI, but to the designer who puts that output into the project without verifying it.
three mini cases
Case 1 — Concept production saved time. A designer wanted to offer the client three distinct directions (industrial, Scandinavian, botanical) for a boutique cafe. With AI, 6 moodboards and 4 atmosphere images for each direction were produced, a total of 30 variations in one day; Normally this job was a week. The client quickly chose the "botanical" direction, and the team devoted its main work time to the technical project. But every material of the selected direction has been rematched from the actual supplier catalogue.
Case 2 — Validation caught an error. An intern had YZ draw the layout of a 12 m² bedroom with "king bed, two bedside tables, desk and wardrobe". The visual looked spacious. The senior architect measured: after the king bed (180×200 cm) was placed, when the wardrobe door was opened, it would hit the bed and there was no 50 cm passage in the room. The AI scale made the "eye judgment" look good, but it didn't fit physically. The settlement was reconstructed with real measurements.
Case 3 — Return from material hallucination. A designer put a type and price of marble "recommended by AI" in the presentation. When the customer liked it and asked for an order, it was understood that that marble did not exist in the market and that AI had combined two real product names and created a fictitious name and price. The verification step from the supplier catalog was skipped; Corrected presentation with a similar real product.

Strong prompt gives space, size, style, function and constraint; the output becomes verifiable and actionable.
What data can you give to AI?
Client briefs contain personal data: name, address, floor, living habits, sometimes health status (e.g. disability). Do not type the customer's ID and address into a public cloud AI tool. Give technical information about the design (size, function, style preference), mask the identity. If corporate projects have a confidentiality agreement (NDA), check the agreement and the data policy of the tool before uploading images and plans of that project to public tools.
Common mistakes
- Mistaking the visual for reality. Substituting impressive rendering for workable project; skipping size and detail.
- Extraordinary prompt. Saying "design a room" without giving the space dimensions; taking placements that don't fit.
- Not verifying the material and price. Putting the product name and price made up by AI into the presentation.
- Asking the AI about the regulations and just using it. Not confirming security-critical decisions from applicable legislation and experts.
- Sharing customer ID. Writing name, address and contact information in public tools.
- Locking into a single output. Thinking the first image is "correct" and skipping the variation and critical look.

Find and correct at least two faulty/suspicious points. Also write a customer brief, mask the identity information and give it to the AI.
