But there are two great dangers in writing in the human field, and this unit is based on them: hallucination (fabricated source, number, quote) and originality (the text is truly your thought and effort).
Let's be clear: AI can be used in academic writing, but how it is used determines everything. Using AI to express your own findings more clearly, correct grammar, improve structure is legitimate and declared transparent. On the other hand, telling AI to "write an article on this subject" and presenting the resulting work as your own violates academic integrity and almost certainly produces a text full of fabricated sources that you cannot defend. This is the line between: AI helps you express your opinion; It doesn't think for you.
Step by step: honest and powerful writing
1. You think first, then let AI help. Decide for yourself what your finding means and what you want to say. Don't let the AI fill in a blank page; Improve your own draft.
2. Link each paragraph to a claim. In academic writing, each paragraph supports a point with evidence. AI helps put your messy paragraphs into this structure.
3. Verify every source, number, quote. No reference, statistic, or quote that the AI inserts or “remembers” into the text remains unverified. This is the strictest rule.
4. Protect your own voice. The text produced by AI is generally uniform and generally valid. Put back your own analytical voice, your accents, your nuances. The text should be read the way you do.
5. Ensure authenticity and transparency. Follow your institution's AI usage guidelines, acknowledge the AI's contribution, and avoid plagiarism (presenting someone else's work as your own) in all its forms.
Caution: When you tell the AI to "add source" or "support with references", the model almost always produces fake references that look real. Do not leave EVERY source in your text without finding it in the database yourself, reading it, and confirming it. A single unverified fake source destroys the credibility of your entire work.
three mini cases
Case 1 — Fake quote scandal averted. A writer wanted to verify the reference to "Bourdieu's 2003 work" that YZ added to the discussion section. There was no such study; AI had attached the name of a famous sociologist to a fabricated publication. The author screened all citations; 3 more were fake. Verification averted reputational crisis.
Case 2 — Uniform text came to life. The part a student wrote with AI was technically correct, but it sounded like a "nobody's" voice — generic, flat, impersonal. When the advisor asked, "Where is your own analysis?", the student added his own interpretation, emphasis, and connection to his data to each paragraph. The text was both original and powerful.
Case 3 — Transparent use accepted. “I used AI for language correction and structure, all content and sources are mine and verified,” one researcher declared in his paper. The magazine didn't mind; The real problem is concealed and unverified AI use, not transparent and audited use.

Common mistakes
- Adding resources to AI. It almost certainly produces fabrications; Verify each attribution yourself.

Then consciously tell the AI "suggest 5 sources on this topic" and search each suggested source in the database and count how many are fake. Summarize your experience in a half-page note that concretely illustrates the risk of hallucinations.
