Aircraft maintenance is a legal task as well as a technical one. Every transaction is based on legislation, and the "flyability" of every aircraft depends on the integrity of a chain of documents. In this unit you will learn how to use artificial intelligence (AI) in regulatory research and compliance monitoring; But we will discuss why no legal-critical result can be confirmed from AI memory.

Let's get to know the legislative framework

Aviation maintenance is governed by authorities and the rules they issue:

  • EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency - European Union Aviation Safety Agency), FAA (Federal Aviation Administration - US civil aviation authority), DGCA (General Directorate of Civil Aviation - Türkiye's authority).
  • Part-145: Approval and operating rules of the maintenance organization.

In this context, two words determine everything: compliance and airworthiness. An aircraft can fly if all mandatory ADs have been applied, it complies with the maintenance schedule and its records are complete.

Attention: AI is not a legal advisor. "Does this AD apply to us?", "can we fly with this MEL clause?", "is this STC valid?" Questions such as these have legal-critical consequences. AI gives a starting point; The final answer is the official text in force, the publication of the authority and the interpretation of the authorized person.

Where does AI come in handy in regulation research?

The safest use is again RAG logic: you give the official text, AI simplifies it, compares it, turns it into a checklist. Typical powerful uses:

  1. Simplifying a long regulation/AD text and finding answers to the questions "who should do what, by when and by what" within the text.
  2. Structuring the applicability analysis: Creating a checklist to compare the effectiveness of the AD with the configuration of the aircraft (the decision is made by the human).
  3. Help interpreting the MEL clause: which conditions (O and M procedures — Operations/Maintenance), which correction period (category A/B/C/D).
  4. Audit preparation: drafting points that appear missing/incompatible in a set of records.
  5. Terminology and process clarification: simplifying regulatory concepts for new staff.

In all of them the output is confirmed in the current official text. Legislation changes constantly; The version the AI ​​knows may be outdated.

Tip: For the status of an AD, always verify three things separately: (1) current revision of the AD (authority release), (2) applicability (does it apply to your aircraft — effectiveness/serial), (3) compliance record (if so, when, is it needed again). AI can mix the three; you separate it.

MEL: the most misused tool

The MEL (Minimum Equipment List) tells you under what conditions the aircraft can fly with malfunctioning equipment — but each item depends on the conditions, times, and sometimes O/M procedures. A common mistake is to use MEL as a "fault amnesty". AI helps simplify an MEL clause, but the applicability decision (are the conditions met, what is the correction period, has the relevant procedure been done) rests with the competent person and is based on the official MEL/approved document.

Case 1 — AD simplification + correct applicability. AI simplified a long and complex AD text: "to aircraft in this series range, on this mission, during this period." The engineer compared the effectivity to the serial number of the aircraft: the aircraft was out of range, AD was not applied. Case 2 — MEL versus misinterpretation. For a malfunction, the team wanted to say "MEL has it, we can fly". Common mistakes
