A design may be beautiful, but if it doubles the budget, it is unworkable. The most overlooked but decisive skill of the landscape architect is to be able to talk business with money and time. Quantity measurement is the measured calculation of the amount of work items in a project (how many m² of flooring, how many trees, how many m³ of soil). Calculation/cost estimation is multiplying these quantities by unit prices and converting them into the total budget. Project management is the planning and execution of work in terms of time, resources and stages. In this unit you will learn how to use AI as a drafting, editing and controlling partner in cost and planning; But we will see why the exact quantity and unit price are project data and current market business.
What does AI do or not do at the cost stage?
Critical distinction: AI neither knows the actual length of your project nor the current local unit prices. The price of one m² of natural stone, the cost of a sapling, and the cost of labor are determined by the market and official unit price lists; these vary by region and day. AI is here:
- Produces draft bill of quantities ("what items would this type of project have, what am I forgetting?").
- Organizes the spreadsheet (collects the quantities and prices you provide, categories).
- Makes a scenario comparison ("How would the cost logically change if B is chosen instead of material A?").
- Flags budget risks ("this item often gets swollen, watch out for this").
- Establishes the work schedule outline (stages, sequence, dependency).
But the final figure is produced by the responsible person, with actual quantities and current prices. Any monetary amount given by YZ is a sample/representative and not an offer.
Caution: Do not present a budget figure generated by the AI as a proposal to the customer. Prices are not up to date and the quantity surveying does not belong to your project. AI organizes the table; You fill in the number and verify it.
Step by step cost and plan
Step 1 — Take out the item list. Ask YZ for a complete bill of quantities appropriate to the project type and correct it according to your own project.
Step 2 — Enter the quantities. Subtract the actual quantity of each item from the project/CAD data.
Step 3 — Get current unit prices. From local market and official unit price lists.
Step 4 — Have the AI create a table. Quantity × price, category totals, percentages, scenario comparison.
Step 5 — Risk and reserve. Mark items with a high risk of inflation and add a reasonable reserve.
Step 6 — Work schedule. Stages, seasonal dependencies (planting season!), ordering.
three mini cases
Case 1 — The forgotten pen was caught. A team was coming up with a park budget. The draft item list produced by YZ reminded me of the "maintenance and irrigation for the first 2 years" item that the team had forgotten. When this item was added, the budget became realistic; The subsequent costs were seen from the beginning.
Case 2 — Scenario comparison. There was a debate about natural stone or concrete in a square project. The team entered the actual quantities and current prices and had the AI tabulate the two scenarios. The difference was clearly seen; The decision was made by numbers, not by feeling. Prices were obtained from the supplier.
Case 3 — Made-up figure problem. An intern asked the AI "how much does this park cost?" he asked and conveyed the total to the customer. When the actual discovery came out, the figure was very different; trust has been damaged. Lesson: AI doesn't produce numbers, it creates tables; Discovery is done with project data.

Common mistakes
- Making AI match the total cost. The figure does not belong to your project and the current market.
- Forgetting maintenance/watering/transportation items. These are the hidden but real part of the budget.
- Not putting reserve shares. Without reasonable reserves for uncertainty, the budget remains optimistic.
- Not planning the planting season. Planting in the wrong season causes both losses and additional costs.
- Choosing the scenario with feeling. The material decision should be made by actual numbers, not impressions.
